We’re the Newmans, and we’ve been traveling in our Vandoit campervan since 2020 with our dog Barry. In 2023, our family grew when we welcomed our daughter, and with that change came a major van upgrade from our original LIV model to a new MOOV.
The MOOV’s modular design gave us the flexibility we needed as new parents on the road. We’ve discovered creative ways to reconfigure our layout to suit our evolving needs, and it has truly transformed the way we travel.
From Couple Travel to Family Adventures
When it was just the two of us, our original Vandoit didn’t include any rear passenger seats. But once Villa Nelle joined us, we needed not just one seat, but a double seat so that one of us could ride beside her on longer trips.
That change led to a big shift in our layout. We had to rethink how to organize our pods, gear, and sleeping space. The modular setup let us do exactly that, without compromise.
Our Current Setup: Function Meets Flexibility

Instead of placing the pods under the window, we moved them under the front of the bed platform, directly behind the double seat. This layout has been incredibly functional and came with bonus features we didn’t anticipate.
Here’s how it looks:
- The pod closest to the sliding door includes our sink and a pull-out drawer that stores the toilet.
- Next to that is the Dometic refrigerator, positioned on the floor.
- Beside the fridge is a four-drawer storage pod for clothes, kitchen gear, and daily essentials.
- Each pod has a drop-down counter leaf above it, which we can raise or lower depending on our needs.
This configuration has given us a level of flexibility that fixed layouts simply can’t match.
A Changing Table We Didn’t Plan For

One of the most pleasant surprises in this setup is how the sink pod has become our go-to changing station for our daughter. It happens to be the perfect height for changing diapers, and the storage area underneath holds all the essentials like diapers and wipes within arm’s reach.
We hang a folding changing pad on the T-track above for easy access. It’s a setup we didn’t plan, but now we can’t imagine living without it.
Built-in Step and Toddler Access
Placing the fridge between the two drop-down leaves turned out to be another unexpected win. It acts as a step stool, helping both our dog and our daughter climb up onto the bed independently.
As Villa Nelle has grown, she’s started using it on her own. This makes bedtime and rest stops much easier, especially when we’re balancing other gear or tasks at the same time.
Counter Space That Works Double Duty

Those folding counter leaves are some of our favorite features. When it’s time to cook, we raise them for plenty of prep space. They give us room to chop vegetables, organize ingredients, and lay out dishes to dry after meals.
At night, those same leaves serve as structural supports for our bed. During the day, we fold up the bed platform to gain space for moving around inside the van. When it’s time to sleep, we release the bed and it rests on the counter leaves. We can’t access the sink when the bed is down, but it’s never been an issue since the setup is quick to switch back if needed.
Why This Layout Works So Well
The beauty of the Vandoit MOOV is that it allows us to create a custom layout that fits our current season of life. As a family with a toddler, a dog, and a flexible work schedule, our priorities change from week to week. This modular system keeps up with us.
Having adaptable components means we can shift our space for parenting, working, resting, or adventuring without having to buy a new vehicle or commit to a permanent layout.
Next Up: Switching to a Solo Setup
Now it’s time to change things again. Derek is about to head out on a guys’ trip to Colorado, and since Villa Nelle and I won’t be joining, the double seat will come out. We’ll move the kitchen pods back under the window to open up space for gear and maximize interior access.
Stay tuned as we share that transition and how the modularity continues to evolve with every adventure.Have questions about how we built this setup or want to see it in action?
