The Van Cats

The Cat’s Out Of The Bag… I Mean In The Van

The Cat’s Out Of The Bag… I Mean In The Van Read More »

Traveling with the family dog has been captured in pictures and stories since RVs and road trips were created.  What about the other man’s best friend…. A cat..? When my wife, Hollie, asked to bring home  Marshal the cat, I was very skeptical and initially said no. I didn’t know how cat ownership would affect our ability to travel. As a Vandoit owner since 2018, I loved being able to make last-minute travel plans.

Weekends were filled with road trips, campgrounds, mountain bike trails, or winter ski trips. Adding a cat to our family was going to throw a wrench into our spontaneity and force us to spend more on pet sitters or boarding. On top of those concerns, cats are known as temperamental, territorial, and impulsive. They are also loving, fearless, and maintain good hygiene. So could a family cat be as easy to travel with as a dog? For Hollie and I, the answer is a resounding yes!

The Journey Begins: Marshall’s Maiden Voyage

The Van Cats

Hollie and I first decided to take Marshall on a van trip for a weekend to Bentonville, Arkansas, a 5-hour drive from our home in the Dallas suburbs. Our list of extra van supplies now included a litter box, cat food, treats, and a few of Marshall’s favorite toys. With a little brainstorming and testing at home, we decided on a top-entry litter box with a lid and Pretty Litter® for its dustless qualities. The Litter box was stored under the bed in the garage but within reach of the cabin space. We always keep a small handheld vacuum in the van which is great for any litter that escapes the box. The litter scoop is stored inside the box, and we use small pet waste bags for disposal.

Making sure the box is clean is the most important aspect of van travel with a cat, but maybe that’s just me as I am EXTREMELY sensitive to any sort of bad smell in the van. The same would apply to dirty clothes from mountain biking or smelly shoes from my basketball games (which will often be in the van after leaving the gym on Thursday game nights to begin the drive for a weekend getaway). We all have our tricks of the trade to eliminate van smells and I was honestly surprised that the litter box would not become an issue.

Marshall: The Adventurous Traveler

The Van Cats

Hollie and I admit that we are very lucky to have Marshall as a cat, as he often has the temperament of a dog. He loves to be with us, lay on our laps and cuddle, and even loves to give little kisses on your face (sometimes in the middle of the night while sleeping). His willingness to always be near us makes him a great travel companion in the van. While driving he enjoys lying on my lap and looking out the window, oftentimes falling asleep with his head on the armrest of the door. My current van is the MOOV built on a passenger van chassis. Having windows all the way around is fun for Marshall and he loves looking out of each window. He’s looking for anything that moves, especially birds and squirrels.. Each window is a portal into a different dimension.

I often think he’s simply just daydreaming about catching one of the squirrels he sees rustling around our campsites or trailhead parking. Marshall has an adventurous spirit so we have worked with him on walks with a harness and leash. Walking a cat on a leash really is just following along to his favorite hunting and hiding spots. Walks often end with Marshall in my arms walking back to the car. But he’s happy to be back in the van where he is safe and cozy, plotting the eventual demise of those pesky squirrels, but only after his nap and another meal or two.

Introducing Tuck: The Newcomer

The Van Cats

After two years of adventures with Marshall, Hollie and I decided to get a 2nd cat for him to have a companion while we are away at the office or traveling to a destination that isn’t cat-friendly. Tuck joined us in 2021 at just 5 weeks old. We adopted him from our vet’s office who had received a litter of kittens rescued from an abandoned barn. Little Tuckee, as we sometimes call him, quickly took to traveling in the van just as Marshall did. Tuck does not have the same cuddly tendencies as Marshall. Tuck wants to be near us but prefers to be at arm’s length.

I think Marshall helped show him the ropes though because he would often be in the bed of the van looking out the windows, or sunbathing in the front windshield. One of Tuck’s favorite activities is pawing at the windshield wipers while it’s raining. As a kitten, he has a little more energy than 6-year-old Marshall, but he expends some of that by exploring between the bikes in the garage space, wrestling Marshall on the bed, or playing with his favorite toys in the cabin. Like Marshall, Tuck loves finding birds out of the van windows. The first time I heard him cackle at a bird was in the van in Hot Springs, Arkansas when a crow landed just a few feet from his perch in the driver’s side door.

Follow Our Journey: Join Marshall and Tuck’s AdVANtures

Adventures with Marshall and Tuck have included mountain bike weekends in Oklahoma and Arkansas, ski trips to Colorado, a road trip tour across the south to Atlanta, Hilton Head Island, Asheville, Chattanooga, and back, and camping trips with family in East Texas. They have always been up for the adventure and I think a big part of the reason why is the security and comfort the van provides. Without it, I don’t think we would have the ability to travel with them at all. To follow along with more adVANtures of Marshall and Tuck, follow my Instagram page @joshsaundersmtb

VOX (Vandoit Owner’s Experience) #11 – Bentonville, Arkansas

VOX (Vandoit Owner’s Experience) #11 – Bentonville, Arkansas Read More »

We packed up our 2019 midroof DO on Wednesday night and started out on our journey south. This would be our 3rd year in a row making the pilgrimage to the self proclaimed “Mountain Bike Capitol” of the world! Before this mountain bike mecca got its popularity, it was where Sam Walton created the very first Walmart. Since then the Walton family has graciously poured over $100 million dollars into the mountain bike scene all over NW Arkansas.

Becoming A Yearly Tradition

vox 11

Who would have thought parking your van in a field with 40-50 other van owners would be something we look forward to every year. VOX, Van Owners Experience, is just that.. An experience! No one expects anything except to reconnect with old friends, and connect with new ones. Everything else after that is just a cherry on top. Each year it seems to get better though. That’s in big part due to Vandoit adopting this VOX as their own.

VOX’s were created just like the popular clothing brand in the 90s/00s. FUBU. FOR US BY US. They started out as a way for fellow van owners to meet, swap stories, and poke our heads in each other’s vans to see ideas we hadn’t thought of yet. Since this one was so close to Blue Springs, MO. The birthplace of Vandoit. They decided to get in on the fun, and show their appreciation and love to us owners (as if they don’t do enough for us) by sponsoring the Bentonville VOX.

So Many Activities!

vox 11

Ice cream trucks. Catered meals. Outdoor camping cooking classes. Fitness classes. Bike company tours. Olympics. Van tours. “Garage sales”. Talent shows. Coffee and breakfast every morning. Snow Cone trucks. Scavenger hunts around the town. Campfires, singalongs & s’mores. Group bike rides. Clean drinking water, bathroom facilities and hot showers! These are some of the events VDI organizes for us owners over the 4 days we are there. Do they have to do it? Of course not! They don’t have to do it, in fact, they LOVE to do this every year. This is no easy gathering to prepare for. The planning for this mid April event all started 5 months prior in December!

I could go on about each thing mentioned above. About how VDI catered a local ice cream truck to come and exclusively serve the van owners, and can we talk about how they made their own special flavor of ice cream for the event too!? Or how every night they provided an amazing dinner for 100+ people at no cost. The annual VDI Olympics and talent show have been a hit for the young and the old. If that’s quite your thing we do camp fires with singalongs and s’mores. There’s so much going on that you forget there are HUNDREDS of miles of perfectly manicured mountain bike trails right there where we park at Applegate Properties… Minutes from Coler Preserve, one of Bentonville’s premier mountain bike hot spots. Boasting more than 25 trails, and it even has a coffee shop right in the middle of it all. No cars allowed though, as it is only accessible by bike/walking.

Vandoit Is A Family

Whether you just like to sit outside your van all day and enjoy the beautiful sunny skies, and green grass under your bare feet. You’re an adrenaline junky who loves to weave in and out of crazy bike trails. Or you’re somewhere in between, and both of these options sound great! These VOX events, and Vandoit offer something for everyone. And at the center of it all is love.

This company isn’t a ‘sell you a van, and wave goodbye when you drive away never to speak to you again’ type of business. No way! You’ll meet their incredible employees like Haley, Austin, and Jayla who organize the event 4-5 months in advance, get to the property before everyone else to make sure it is all set up and ready to go, get up early to make sure the coffee and breakfast is ready, run events throughout the day, play soccer with all the sweet van fam kids, and stay up later than everyone else to edit photos and videos of the days fun! You’ll meet other amazing VDI employees like Allison, Brian, Roger, Staci, Sam Jr., Kyle, Billy who are also there because VDI values the people who work hard day in and day out to make our dreams come true.

So heres to the 3rd Annual Bentonville VOX. The 11th official VOX. Catch us out on the road in other VOX’s, possibly MOAB, UT this fall! Cheers everyone, blessed travels. Slow wide turns.

How To Plan And Prep The Perfect Family Roadtrip

How To Plan And Prep The Perfect Family Roadtrip Read More »

Summer is almost here and that means it is officially road trip season. We’ve made plenty of road trips in the past, but none of those have matched in magnitude to what we’ve experienced since owning our Vandoit. Whether big or small, planning a road trip takes time and effort but it’s one hundred percent worth it. Here are five helpful steps we’ve found in making our road trips a summer success!

1. Pick your location

The Perfect Family Roadtrip

This could be a bucket list destination or a yearly favorite. Map out how long it takes to get there, and how many days you will need for travel as well as play. We love traveling in the afternoon after work and into the evening. This helps us use less time off of work and we are able to have more fun days when we do our driving at night or early in the morning.

2. Figure Out Where You’re Sleeping

The Perfect Family Roadtrip

Once you have your location picked and days mapped out, line up your sleeping locations first. We love using apps like ioverlander and freeroam to find all of the available boondocking and campsite spots available where we are traveling. If we know we are only traveling 4-5 hours the first night, then we can look on the map and find a spot that matches where we need to go. We’ve stayed at rest stops, on BLM land, and even parks that allow free overnight parking on our travel days. There are so many options out there! If campsites are needed for our actual play days, then we will get those booked. But the beauty of having a Vandoit van is that you can be more flexible, and nine times out of ten, you will find a spot for the night, even if it’s at a park!

 3. Pick Out The Activities You Want To Do!

The Perfect Family Roadtrip

We usually plan 1-3 hikes or activities a day and then build in some free time or relaxing into each day. Make a list of all the activities you’d love to do, highlight your favorites, and don’t stress about doing it all! Being together is more important than cramming in all the sites.

4. Plan Meals And Snacks!

The Perfect Family Roadtrip

We do the majority of our cooking at camp, and we love it. We plan out our meals for every day, make a menu, and meal prep a few days before our trip. Meal prepping will save you time and money on your vacation. I love coming back from a long day of adventuring and knowing that all I have to do is heat up our already-prepped food and within 15 minutes we are eating. Being able to carry our kitchen and food with us wherever we go inside our van has completely transformed the way we travel! We get more play in because we don’t HAVE to make it back to camp in order to eat, we can eat and cook wherever we go.

5. You’ve done all the work, now you are ready!

The Perfect Family Roadtrip

Get that van packed up and ready to go. We suggest using the three days before you leave to pack and prep a little at a time. Split the workload amongst family members or simply break it up over a few days. This will make you less stressed, and get you excited for the trip to come. So the last and final tip is to HAVE FUN! Once you’ve done the work, you are prepared and ready to go. Is it going to be perfect and flawless, most likely not. There will still be challenges, but it will be amazingly worth it.

Pack those snacks, crank the tunes, and get ready for endless summer adventures with a Vandoit van. Where are you going first?

Leap of Faith On A Campervan

A Leap of Faith On A Campervan That Met All Of Our Needs

A Leap of Faith On A Campervan That Met All Of Our Needs Read More »

In 2017, after a successful cycling race season, my wife Christie Tracy and I decided to fully embrace the professional cycling lifestyle. We wanted a van that would suit our needs and allow us to travel the country while providing all the necessary amenities. However, our search for the perfect van quickly became discouraging due to high prices and the quality of materials used in most van builds.

Luckily, Christie stumbled upon a website called www.Vandoit.com, which turned out to be a small family-owned custom van build company located in Blue Springs, MO. We were amazed by the custom builds and engineering concepts showcased on their website and felt like we had finally found the van of our dreams.

In late 2017, Christie reached out to Vandoit (formerly “VanDoIt”) for more information, and to our surprise, the CEO at the time, Mr. Brent Kline, personally called us to discuss their products. We expected the typical sales pitch, but instead, we had a genuine conversation with someone who understood our needs and shared our passion for cycling. From that moment on, we felt like we were part of the Vandoit family, not just customers, and we took a leap of faith by placing our trust in the company to build our dream van.

Our First Vandoit

Leap of Faith On A Campervan

Our first Vandoit van was the 2018 LIV model, which was their first-generation design and included all the features and amenities we desired. In April 2018, we were off to the races with our dream van. The LIV model perfectly suited our needs for traveling to races across the country and serving as an onsite race day support vehicle.

One of the standout features was the use of aluminum extrusion as the skeleton system, which allowed us to easily mount and repurpose various equipment without damaging the van’s structure. As Vandoit gained popularity within the van community, their chief engineer, Jared McCauslin, began implementing modifications and improvements to their designs. These updates included a lithium power system, Espar heater, kitchen pod, hot water, DC air conditioning, and so much more.

Although our first-generation van had met all our needs without any mechanical issues, Jared recommended updating our LIV model in 2019. The simple addition of the Espar heater and some electrical component upgrades in this new van made all the difference.

Our Second Van

Leap of Faith On A Campervan

In 2021, we collaborated with Vandoit on our next van build, incorporating Jared’s new designs and concepts. We are now proudly traveling around the country in our second Vandoit van, sharing our passion and promoting the unique platforms offered by the company. We have been amazed at how rapidly Vandoit has grown in just a few years. Despite their increasing popularity and demand, they have maintained their commitment to treating customers like family. This level of personalized care and attention is often lost as companies expand, but Vandoit has remained true to its core values. We are grateful for the family-like atmosphere and the exceptional service we have received from Vandoit since we took that leap of faith back in 2017.

In conclusion, our journey with Vandoit has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the initial leap of faith to finding the van of our dreams, we have experienced the passion and dedication of a family-owned company that genuinely cares about its customers. Vandoit’s custom van builds and innovative designs have exceeded our expectations and allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the on-the-road professional cycling lifestyle. We are proud to be part of the Vandoit family and look forward to many more adventures on the road with our custom-built van.

Stage 1 Audio: The Foundation of Quality Sound

The Stage 1 Audio package sets the stage for exceptional audio quality in your van. We upgrade the front door speakers with JL Audio C3 Component Speakers, ensuring high-definition audio for your favorite music and podcasts. Additionally, we add sound-deadening materials to the front door panels, minimizing outside noise for a more immersive listening experience.

But it doesn’t stop there. We take it a step further by upgrading the rear door speakers with marine loudspeakers, providing excellent sound quality even with the doors open. The entire sound system is controlled and amplified through fully digital amplifiers and processing, seamlessly integrating with the Ford factory sound system. Plus, with the added Bluetooth capability, you can enjoy great sound even when the vehicle is off. Perfect for the neighborhood barbecue!

Stage 2 Audio: Adding Depth and Power

Vandoit's Audio Options

Building upon the Stage 1 package, Stage 2 Audio brings your music to life with added depth and power. In addition to the front and rear door upgrades, this package introduces a 10″ 400-watt ported subwoofer, delivering deeper bass and enhancing the overall soundstage of your van. With this addition, every beat transforms your van into a mobile concert.

Stage 3 Audio: Immersive Sound Experience

For those who crave the ultimate audio experience, Stage 3 Audio is the pinnacle of van sound systems. This complete sound system is designed to bring visual sound to life, making you feel like you’re sitting inside the music. Rear door speakers are upgraded to a larger component setup for deep, crisp mids, while the subwoofer is boosted to a high output of 10 inches for rich, immersive sound. For reference; imagine the sound in the movie theater!

But the real magic lies in the center channel pod speakers installed in the ceiling of the van, quite literally surrounding you with sound. With Stage 3 Audio, every note, every chord envelops your van. This is great for tailgating!

Portable JBL Charge 4 Speaker: Take the Party Anywhere

Vandoit's Audio Options

Transformed Family Ski Trips

From Minivan Misery to Skiing Serenity: How Our Vandoit Transformed Family Ski Trips

From Minivan Misery to Skiing Serenity: How Our Vandoit Transformed Family Ski Trips Read More »

We’ve been a ski family for six years.  We started teaching our oldest son at three and a half years old. The minivan we had would get packed to the brim each year as we added another kid to the skiing mix. Everything would get wet, kids would complain, and with snowy roads and parking lots, we were constantly worried about getting stuck…

That all changed once we got our Vandoit! Having our van with us on our ski weekends has made this the best year yet for so many reasons!

We can pack skis, helmets, boots, all the gear and food needed for six people, and still have enough room to walk around and hang out in the van. And, did I mention while hanging out it’s a toasty 68 degrees the whole time? With the Espar heater, we can easily heat our van without keeping the engine running, even all day if needed.

Waiting Can Be Fun

Transformed Family Ski Trips

If you’ve ever driven to a ski resort, you know it can mean long drives, or extended waits in your vehicle. Usually, this involves some whining and complaining from kids, well not anymore! Our kids hop up into our double bunk beds and either read or watch a movie together while we wait for the resort to open.

On top of having beds and room for kid-entertaining activities, simply being able to stand up in your vehicle is amazing. Nothing compares to the sheer bliss of dressing for the ski day inside the van. Getting six people dressed in full ski gear is no easy task. Being able to do it while inside, staying dry and warm, is a joy beyond compare. Trust me on this one, if this was the only plus to van life and ski days, it would still be enough to make it worth it! But, of course, there‘s more!

The Whole Family On The Mountain

Transformed Family Ski Trips

Having our entire family on the mountain with us brings deep fulfillment! But with four kids ranging from ages nine to three, there is a gap in abilities. Those three-year-old legs just don’t last as long as the older kids do. Almost every week, our youngest falls asleep either on the lifts, in line, or strangely enough while skiing. But, this isn’t a problem with our Vandoit! Our youngest takes a nap in the bed, inside our van while everyone else keeps skiing. Mom and Dad take turns hanging out in the van with our sleeping babe, and it has made our ski days perfect for the whole family. No matter what the ski day may hold; full sun and all-day runs, or snowy cold and lots of breaks in between, our Vandoit makes every ski day better.

One thing is for certain, there’s no going back to ski trips in the mini-van! Once you’ve got a feel for van life, it’s hard to imagine anything else. We knew we would use our Vandoit on summer trips and weekend getaways, but being able to use it to the max on our ski days throughout the winter has made it the ultimate adventure vehicle, and well worth the investment in our family adventures!

Even in the face of challenges, they’ve stood by him, offering support and encouragement every step of the way.

As Charley continues to crisscross the country in pursuit of his passion, one thing remains clear: he’s not just driving a van; he’s driving success, one fairway at a time. And with his unwavering determination and the support of his Vandoit family, the sky’s the limit for this golf rep on the go.
